TL;DR: SI agents have made more than 138 million payments on Coinbase's Base network, up from roughly 1,500 in mid-2025, according to Chainalysis (Oct 14, 2026). More than 87% of those payments cost under ten cents — agents buying data, compute, and code checks. But strip out the wash, test, and internal traffic, and Visa and Artemis's audit finds about $15.0 million in real commerce. Stripe launched its own machine-payments protocol in March 2026 and has published no volume number at all. Our call: cumulative agent payments pass 200 million by December 31, 2026 — while audited real agent dollars stay under 1% of the raw figure.

Agent Brief: Chainalysis, Inside North America's $3 Trillion Crypto Economy (Oct 14, 2026): cumulative x402 transactions on Base rose from ~1,500 (mid-2025) to >138 million by Q3 2026; >87% under $0.10 (most common 1–10¢); July 2026 alone: ~75 million payments worth ~$24 million (~$0.32 average). x402.org live counter (Oct 27, 2026): 75.41M transactions / $24.24M volume in the last 30 days. Visa × Artemis audit (Jul 14, 2026; data to Apr 21, 2026): raw ~$135.7M → adjusted ~$15.0M across 109.6M transactions after removing wash/test/internal (89% of dollar volume). TRM Labs (Sep 2026): only 0.6%–7.5% of screened volume appeared agent-driven. Stripe + Tempo Machine Payments Protocol launched Mar 18, 2026; no MPP volume disclosed.

What did Chainalysis actually count?

Chainalysis counted payments made over x402 — Coinbase's open standard that revives the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code so software can pay for a resource in the same request that fetches it — on one network, Base. The cumulative count went from about 1,500 payments in mid-2025 to more than 138 million by the third quarter of 2026. Fortune, Decrypt, and CoinDesk all reported the same figures on October 14, 2026.

The shape matters more than the headline. More than 87% of the payments cost under ten cents, most commonly one to ten cents. That is not shopping. That is software buying software things: SI model inference, live web data, compute, code-checking tools — metered in fractions of a cent per call. July 2026 alone saw roughly 75 million payments worth about $24 million, an average ticket of about 32 cents. The protocol's own front page tells the same story in the present tense: x402.org's live counter showed 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million in volume over the last 30 days when we captured it on October 27, 2026.

So how much of it is real?

This is where the number gets honest. Visa and Artemis published an audit on July 14, 2026 (data through April 21, 2026) that took the raw x402 dollar figure — about $135.7 million — and removed wash trading, test traffic, and internal transfers. What survived was about $15.0 million across 109.6 million transactions: 89% of the dollar volume did not survive the wash test.

TRM Labs, screening the same ecosystem in September 2026, found $25.62 million in likely commerce out of $52.7 million gross — and estimated that only 0.6% to 7.5% of it appeared to be driven by agents at all, with the caveat that agents and ordinary scripts are hard to separate on-chain. Two independent audits, one conclusion: the payment count is real and enormous; the real commerce riding on it is still small — on the order of one percent of the noise.

Why is Stripe silent?

On March 18, 2026, Stripe and Tempo launched the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) — "an open standard, internet-native way for agents to pay," co-authored by the two companies, with a launch directory of more than 100 services. It is a serious protocol from the largest payments company on the internet. And Stripe has published no transaction volume for it — none. Coinbase publishes its count; Stripe publishes a launch post. Until MPP discloses a number, the only machine-payments economy anyone can actually measure is the one Chainalysis counted.

What is The White Report's call?

Cumulative x402 payments pass 200 million by December 31, 2026 — while audited real (wash-adjusted, agent-driven) dollars remain under 1% of the raw cumulative dollar figure in the next published audit.

The count leg is momentum: 75 million payments in the last 30 days against a 138 million cumulative base does not need a miracle to clear 200 million by New Year's Eve. The dollars leg is the discipline: every audit so far has found the real money at roughly a penny on the dollar, and nothing published since changes that ratio. This call is graded in public on the first Scoreboard after a Q4 audit update, and no later than the January 2027 review.

FAQ

What is x402? An open standard, published by Coinbase in May 2025, that lets software pay for a resource over HTTP using the 402 "Payment Required" status code. A server quotes a price, the agent pays, a facilitator settles, and the resource is delivered with a payment receipt.

Are 138 million payments the same as $138 million? No — and confusing the two is the most common error in coverage of this story. The count is 138 million payments. Their combined value is far smaller: July's 75 million payments were worth about $24 million in total, and the audited real-commerce figure is about $15 million.

What do agents actually buy? Mostly machine inputs: SI model inference and API access (the dominant category), compute, live web data, and code-checking tools — typically priced per call in fractions of a cent.

Why does the $15 million figure matter if the count is real? Because it separates a working payments rail from a working economy. The rail is proven at scale. The economy — agents spending meaningful money on real goods and services — is what the next audits will measure.

What would make this call wrong? A Q4 Chainalysis update showing cumulative payments below 200 million on December 31, or a published audit putting real agent-driven dollars at or above 1% of the raw cumulative figure.
