    Re DENNIS LYNN HARBER

Re DENNIS LYNN HARBER, who died in prison in Mexico many years ago, coming to a bad end, as sometimes happens if physics is true and what goes around really comes around. This is just am item for the nostalgia file–about my own brief but perculiar involvement with this loser.

It was Veracruz, Mex., Spring of 1964, and a homosexual party that I myself, being heterosexual, did not attend. (My sources were reliable) He casually spliced porno photos into talk of his WWII experiences and suggestions of activiy as a soldier, mercenary, and spy, as he tried to persuade two very naive boys from Crystal Lake, Illinois to scubadive and rig a Russian trawler with explosives that he himself would provide along with the scuba gear. The boys could then blow it up in the harbor at such time as the trawler would once again come in for shelter from a Norte. The trawler, he said, was fitted out with surveilance gear and some bad, nasty people, very unAmerican they were. The payment for this once in a lifetime adventure and patriotism would be 30,000 US dollars supplied by Harber’s connection, General Walker himself. Harber knew how to address the matter of patriotism. He, after all, was a German Irishman, or was it an Irish German, who had served in the SS on the Eastern Front– so he boasted.

Before the boys could make up their minds, Harber left town. Two weeks later a mysterious and long telegram came from Mexico City and Harber. It looked to me to be all gibberish, but the boys insisted it was a code, he was trying to tell us something! Then why didn’t he write in plain language?

I soon wound up in the Veracruz jail, twice, for that was my outlaw period. An aquaintance left for the US and made it as far as Mazatlan and. unknown to me, nearly died in a hospital. Six years later, by coincidence, I ran into him–and he brought up the matter of the telegram. He said that while in the hospital in Matzatlan he read a newspaper that carried an account of an attempted invasion of Cuba by Cuban exiles (that was Spring, 1964), and the account had had one word that he had recognized from the telegram “code.” It was the name of an island, though he didn’t know it was an island when we examined the “code” that we had examined for an hour or so several times before finally dismissing it as gibberish. The island had a cache of munitions, as I recall him saying, and some exile invader had either washed up on it or been captured offshore. He said that in the fever of his illness he had seen the telegram vividly, again and again and juxtaposed with the Island name in the newspaper article. I went to a library and tried to find old magazines to read about some of the political events I had paid no attention to in that time that is gone forever, but I got sidetracked for some reason and never followed the matter up. I’ve forgotten the name of the island. I curse myself that I didn’t write down the telegram.

Was it, in fact, in code? Maybe a simple, or simple-minded one that Harber could later use to prove that he was, in that play that we know to have been a farce, the actor that he claimed and wanted to be? What, after all, is the fun of being a spy if no one knows that you are? What do you think?

A League of Their Own: A Look Inside the Christian Defense League
    by David Boylan [2004]

The United States during the 1950s experienced an unparalleled growth of extremist organizations from the John Birch Society on the right to the Fair Play for Cuba Committee on the left. The heating up of the Cold War, the Supreme Court’s decision to end segregation in 1954, and the establishment of a Communist Cuba in 1959 spurred this growth. One of the lesser known but more influential right wing fringe organizations that were formed during this period was the Christian Defense League (CDL). The CDL managed to meld anti-communism, anti-Semitism, anti-Castro activities, and a hatred of the “liberal” policies of the Kennedy Administration into a cohesive whole. It is in this context that the CDL will be examined.

The driving forces behind the rise of the CDL were Reverend Wesley A. Swift and Colonel William Potter Gale. It seemed inevitable that they would gravitate toward each other. Their religious beliefs were similar: both were adherents of what is now called Christian Identity, an updated version of the earlier British Israelite Movement that originated in the late nineteenth century. Christian Identity adherents believe that those of Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Nordic, or Aryan origin were the true Israelites, “the sons of Adam”, and that those of Jewish origin were “the sons of Satan.”
